Own Your Power
It is simpler than you think.
There is a saying, “Your power lies where your attention is”. Now, I’m not quite sure if I made this up or heard this somewhere, but it makes sense. Why? Because we have the ability to focus on things when we want and how we want- which equates to what I call “power”. Power proving our ability to direct ourselves and thinking.
While working with people in therapy, I noticed that many tend to keep their attention on the most pleasurable experiences and pull (or attempt to pull) their attention away from the most unpleasant ones. The thing is… we should be attuned to both. But as with anything, this takes practice and sometimes, help from another.
Besides beginning counseling, here are ways you can own your power:
1.) Take 10 minutes to meditate or to go to an actual “safe space”.
2.) Make a conscious effort to slow down. (Whether physically or mentally).
3.) Own and balance negative thoughts with other thoughts. (Don’t push them away. Know that they are “thoughts”, you are human and it’s okay to feel.)
4.) Accept that we cannot control everything.
5.) Practice mindful breathing.
This is a short list of recommendations to get you started. Now go out and really use your attention to put these things into practice. Owning your power is simpler than you think.
